UFC 246: Stats To Know

UFC 246: Stats To Know

On Saturday January 18th, 2020 all of us fighting fans get to witness the return one of the most polarizing stars in all of mixed martial arts. Conor McGregor is finally back after a 14 month hiatus and is taking on the beloved and well respected Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in what should be an absolute barn burner to start the new year! The rest of this card is backed up with a ton of up and coming talent like Sodiq Yusuff, Nasrat Haqparast, Grant Dawson and Maycee Barber just to name a few. As always we here at The Fight Analyst provide you all with the stats to know for every fight to help you all cash out at the ticket window come Saturday night. Check it out below!

Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone

First off we really need to give kudos to Dana White for stepping up and starting off the new year with a BANG by making this fight happen. This fight between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone is absolutely going to live up to the hype and is one you will not want to miss! There are question marks for both fighters coming into this fight.

Is Cerrone still an elite level fighter coming off of back to back losses in which he was finished in both? And can McGregor ever get back to his championship level of fighting after the mauling by the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov? These questions and more will be answered come Saturday January 18th live on PPV.

Stats To Know:

  • McGregor lands 5.27 striker per minute while throwing 10.97 strikes per minute, good for 48% striking accuracy
  • 18 of McGregor’s 21 wins have come by knockout or TKO
  • Cerrone was out-struck 144-85 in just 14:18 combined in his last two bouts (he lost inside the distance in both fights)

Holly Holm vs Raquel Pennington

In the co-main event we have two perennial Bantamweight contenders in Holly Holm and Raquel Pennington facing off. Both fighters have had their fair share of ups and downs in their UFC careers but with a win here by either fighter could push them towards a title shot in the future given the current state of the Bantamweight division. This fight may not be the best co-main event on paper but these two women come to fight and both will fight tooth and nail till the very end.

Stats To Know:

  • Holm has immaculate striking defense at 57% while absorbing only 2.83 strikes per minute
  • Pennington beat Irene Aldana in her most recent bout even though she was out-struck 52-47
  • All of Holm’s losses in her UFC career have been to either current or former UFC champions

Alexey Oleinik vs Maurice Greene

This is one interesting Heavyweight clash between the submission ace Alexey Oleinik and the giant that is Maurice Greene. Both fighters are coming off losses where they were finished due to strikes. With that said, both should be eager to get back into the win column here which makes this fight a fun one to watch. Expect a high pace fight right out of the gate as both Oleinik and Greene have only seen the second round a combined 3 times (15 fights) in the last 3 years.

Stats To Know:

  • Oleinik has the most fights out of any current UFC fighter with 71 fights
  • 45 of Oleinik’s 57 wins have come by submission
  • Greene will have the striking advantage landing 5.38 strikes per minute and landing at a 44% clip

Claudia Gadelha vs Alexa Grasso

Two of the StrawWeight divisions best square off Saturday night. Claudia Gadelha has been a contender in the StrawWeight division for years while Alexa Grasso is trying to become the next big thing in the division. Gadelha is coming off a hard fought win in her most recent outing against Randa Markos while Grasso is coming off of a tough luck loss by bizarre majority decision to Carla Esparza.

This is a classic grappler vs striker matchup. Gadelha is a tenacious grappler that will look to impose her grappling prowess against her opposition in Grasso who has shown weakness in that area. While Grasso will look to keep this fight stand by using her exceptional footwork and jab to keep to Gadelha at the end of her strikes. This is a very intriguing fight on this fight card.

Stats To Know:

  • Gadelha lands 3.34 takedowns per 15 minutes of fight time while being successful on 47% of her attempts
  • Grasso lands 5.25 strikes per minute which is over 2 more strikes per minute than her current opposition
  • Grasso has been taken down 12 times in her last 5 fights combined

Anthony Pettis vs Diego Ferreira

At one point Anthony “Showtime” Pettis was the best of the best at 155 pounds but now he has been in the middle of the pack in the alternating wins and losses between both the Lightweight and Welterweight divisions. Diego Ferreira on the other hand is coming in hot! He’s coming off of the best performance of his career in the beating he gave Maribek Taisumov and has won his last 5 fights dating back to 2016. Ferreira can really make a name for himself with a win here over Pettis, while Pettis can show why he’s still the cream of the crop in the Lightweight division with a win here over Ferreira Saturday night.

Stats To Know:

  • Ferreira puts on an absurd pace throwing 14.42 strikes per minute while landing 5.19 per minute
  • Pettis has been out-struck 275-161 in his last 3 fights combined
  • Pettis has lost inside the distance in 2 of his last 3 losses

Maycee Barber vs Roxanne Modafferi

Maycee Barber has hit the ground running ever since she stepped foot inside the octagon going 4-0 in the UFC (8-0 overall). Barber is arguably the #1 prospect in all of women’s mma and it is hard to see the hype train being derailed by her opposition Roxanne Modafferi. Modafferi has long been a staple of women’s mma for quite some time. She has defied the odds when she made the finale of The Ultimate Fighter and when she beat Valentina Shevchenko’s sister Antonina Shevchenko but this is a very tall task at hand to give Barber her first loss in her young mma career.

Stats To Know:

  • Barber puts on an incredible pace throwing 13.64 strikes per minute while landing an absurd 8.32 per minute
  • Modafferi gets out-struck by a comfortable margin at 15% and her opponents have a 2-1 striking ratio against her
  • Barber has finished 7 of her 8 professional wins (5 via ko/tko and 2 via submission)

Andre Fili vs Sodiq Yusuff

This fight is my sleeper fight for fight of the night. Sodiq Yusuff came into the UFC with a ton of hype around him after his Contender Series fight with Mike Davis (which is the most viewed fight in the series on YouTube). Since that Contender Series fight Yusuff has rattled off a 3-0 UFC record. This will be the toughest fight of Yusuff’s 11 professional fight career when he takes on Andre “Touchy” Fili. Fili coming off two outstanding performances against Myles Jury and Sheymon Moraes in whom he knocked out in the first round. This is going to be a close and hard fight for both fighters and one you certainly will not want to miss!

Stats To Know:

  • Yusuff throws 13.49 strikes per minute landing 6.61 good for 49%
  • Fili averages 2.44 takedowns per 15 minutes while landing 46% of his takedowns
  • Yusuff has not faced one takedown attempt in his 3 fights in the UFC

Nasrat Haqparast vs Drew Dober

This fight is going to be an absolute barn burner! This contains two very high output strikers in the Lightweight division. Nasrat Haqparast the Tri-Star product has looked sensational during his 3 fight win streak in the UFC. While on the other end of the spectrum Drew Dober has looked just as impressive winning 4 of his last 5 with his most recent win being a knockout of Polo Reyes in the first round. These two are going to be trading leather early and often and it’s going to be a crowd-pleaser for sure!

Stats To Know:

  • Haqparast out-strikes his opponents by a whopping 21%
  • Dober throws 11.38 strikes per minute while landing 4.44 good for 39% accuracy
  • Haqparast has out-struck all of his 4 UFC opponents by a combined 265-162

Chas Skelly vs Grant Dawson

This fight is for the fight fans that love themselves a grappling match. Chas Skelly and Grant Dawson are both high level wrestlers that are looking to drag the fight to the mat any way possible. With that said by looking at the numbers, it may look like Dawson has the edge in the wrestling but Skelly has the experience and scrambling ability to make this the toughest fight of Dawson’s career. This should be a very high paced grappling mma fight that has us intrigued to see who gets the best of who.

Stats To Know:

  • Dawson lands almost 2 more significant strikes per minute than his counter part Skelly
  • Skelly gets out-struck by 12% while Dawson gets out-struck by 9%
  • Both fighters land a healthy number of takedowns but Dawson lands almost 5 times as many as Skelly does per 15 minutes

Aleksa Camur vs Justin Ledet

In this Light Heavyweight clash we have the Stipe Miocic protege Aleksa Camur taking on Justin Ledet. Camur is coming into this fight with an unbeaten 5-0 record. A knockout victory on the Contender Series landed him a spot on the UFC roster. Ledet on the other hand a 5 fight UFC veteran is coming off back to back losses to the hands of two rising prospects in Rakic and Walker. It’s hard to envision this fight going to the judges scorecards given the way these two come out throwing heavy leather. Expect one of these two getting finished before that final bell.

Stats To Know:

  • Ledet gets out-struck by 11% by his opponents
  • Ledet has a 3″ height and 6″ reach advantage
  • Camur has finished everyone of his opponents by way of knockout between his amateur and professional careers

Tim Elliott vs Askar Askarov

In the only Flyweight bout of the evening we have former title challenger Tim Elliott taking on unbeaten Russian prospect Askar Askarov. Even though the fight ended in a draw against Brandon Moreno, Askarov looked very good in his UFC debut. Elliott on the other hand got finished in round 1 to the now title challenger in Deiveson Figueiredo. This should be a high level scrambling match between these two grapple heavy fighters. This makes for a very interesting scrap that the fans will enjoy come Saturday night.

Stats To Know:

  • Both Elliott and Askarov combine for over 8 takedowns landed per 15 minutes
  • Both fighters out-strike their opponents by more than 5%
  • Elliott lands almost 2 more significant strikes per minute than Askarov 3.53 – 2.00

Ode Osbourne vs Brian Kelleher

This is should be a fun scrap between Bantamweights in this one. Ode Osbourne is making his UFC debut after receiving a contract from his first round submission victory on the Contender Series. While Brian Kelleher is looking to get back into the win column after some tough losses to Montel Jackson and John Lineker before sitting out all of 2019 due to injuries. Kelleher has a load of experience coming into this one and should have the upper hand everywhere in this fight. But with that said Osbourne has shown that he has some flashy striking arsenal with a ton of tricks up his sleeve to get the job done.

Stats To Know:

  • Osbourne has 1″ height and 7″ reach advantage over Kelleher
  • Both of these fighters have high output throwing over 10 strikes per minute and landing over 45% of their strikes

Sabina Mazo vs JJ Aldrich

Our first fight of the night starts off in the women’s Flyweight division between Sabina Mazo and JJ Aldrich. The Kings MMA product Mazo looked much improved in her most recent bout against Shana Dobson when she completely dominated her from bell to bell. In the other corner Aldrich has looked good in her time inside the octagon with a 4-1 record and her only blemish coming against Maycee Barber. Aldrich has gotten a slight advantage coming into this fight as Mazo’s last opponent Dobson is now training with Aldrich for this fight over at Elevation Fight Team in Colorado. We will see if that helps Aldrich overcome the height and reach advantage that Mazo possesses in this one.

Stats To Know:

  • Mazo is out-striking her opponents by 23%
  • Aldrich is letting her opponents land at a 1.13-1 clip against her
